All of us are social by our very nature. We are taught how to make friends: perhaps to be kind, be funny, or be outgoing. What do we do when those skills have gotten us a romantic partner, but things still aren’t quite right? Fighting and conflict can be an upsetting and disorienting experiences, especially when it is occurring at home.
I believe conflict can be a way for us to communicate our needs to others, but what do we do when discussions are continuously escalating into yelling matches or followed by days of cold shoulders? Or perhaps there is no fighting at all yet there are many things going un-said between you two. I believe the foundation to resolution is hearing what your partner is saying and understanding what they are asking for from you.
I take a collaborative approach in how I work with couples. I want to hear each individual explain their side of the story. Through this process, it is my hope that you will gain additional insight into your relationship. From this understanding, you can choose to change what isn’t working, learn to accept what never will change, and re-discover the commonalities that brought you two together in the first place.
Everyone is capable of change. I ask that you come to our sessions with a curious attitude. In this therapeutic relationship, we are a team. You are the expert on your lives, and I will follow your lead but never judge you.
I use an analytical and nonjudgmental viewpoint grounded in compassion and humor. In my prior career, I sifted through numbers and information to understand the story being told. I believe these skills can help you too. Everything about your life forms a unique picture of your story. I would be honored to work as your partner on this journey of growth and self-discovery.
